Andong Korea Road Trip: Six UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Most of Korea's UNESCO World Heritage Sites are scattered across the country — a fortress here, a royal tomb there. But six of them cluster within a tight radius in northern Gyeongsangbuk-do, and that changes everything for a road trip.

Three separate UNESCO inscriptions overlap in this one region: the Historic Villages of Korea (2010), the Sansa Buddhist Mountain Monasteries (2018), and the Seowon Neo-Confucian Academies (2019).

Nowhere else in the country can you drive through all three in a single trip.

The catch is that these heritage sites aren't well connected by public transportation — the bus to Byeongsan Seowon runs just three times a day. With one rental car, though, you can cover all six sites in three days.

Here's how to plan the Andong Korea road trip that ties them all together.

1. Getting Started: Picking Up Your Car

Andong doesn't have a foreign-facing rental Office of its own, so the move is to pick up your car on the way in — at the airport or a nearby KTX station — and drive from there. Here's where to start and what to bring.

🚗 Where to Pick Up Your Car

  • Gimhae Airport (PUS) Office — pick up right after your international arrival (best if you're flying in directly from abroad).

  • Gyeongju Station Office — reachable by direct KTX from Seoul and the shortest drive to Andong (best if you're already touring Korea). If you're building a wider Gyeongju Korea itinerary, this is the natural launch point.

  • Busan Station Office — pick up after taking the KTX from Seoul.

  • Haeundae Office — start after an overnight in Busan.

Documents needed: your passport, your original International Driving Permit, and a credit card in your own name.

⚠️ One-way returns are available for an additional fee — useful on a route like this one.

🗺️ The Six Sites at a Glance

All six sites and their inscription years:

  • Hahoe Village (2010) — Andong

  • Byeongsan Seowon (2010 + 2019) — Andong

  • Bongjeongsa Temple (2018) — Andong

  • Dosan Seowon (2019) — Andong

  • Buseoksa Temple (2018) — Yeongju

  • Sosu Seowon (2019) — Yeongju

Route

Driving time

Gimhae Airport → Hahoe Village

~2h 30m

Gyeongju Station → Hahoe Village

~1h 40m

Gyeongju Station → Yangdong Village

Plan on a minimum of three days to see all six.

2. The Six UNESCO Sites 🏛️

This is the heart of the trip: three UNESCO inscriptions, six sites, a thousand years of Confucian and Buddhist heritage. Here's each one, in the order that makes for the smoothest drive.

🏘️ Hahoe Folk Village

Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong (2010)

Andong Hahoe Village is a clan village where the Pungsan Ryu family has lived for more than 600 years — and remarkably, around 70% of today's residents are still Ryus. It was the home base of Ryu Seong-ryong, the Chief State Councilor who steered Korea through the Imjin War.

What makes Hahoe special is that it's a living village, not a museum — people still actually reside here, which is why it's often compared to Japan's Shirakawa-go.

The recognition has drawn some famous visitors, too: Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her birthday here in 1999, and former U.S. President Bush has visited as well. Cross the river to the Buyongdae Cliff for the classic view over the whole village.

🕘 Open 09:00–18:00. There's a free shuttle between the parking lot and the entrance, bike rental is available, and you'll want about 3 hours to explore.

🎓 Byeongsan Seowon

Historic Villages (2010) + Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies (2019)

Here's a rare one: Byeongsan Seowon is inscribed under two separate UNESCO listings at once — first as part of the Hahoe historic villages in 2010, then again with the seowon academies in 2019. This Confucian academy honors Ryu Seong-ryong and his son Ryu Jin, and its Mandaeru Pavilion is one of the most beautiful in the country. Of roughly 600 seowon nationwide, only nine made the 2019 list — and this is one of them.

🕘 Open 09:00–18:00, with free admission and parking, then about a 400 m walk from the lot. It's only about 10 minutes by car from Hahoe Village.

💡 This is the site that makes the case for driving. Bus 210 runs just three times a day, and the alternative is a 40-minute walk. As one visitor put it, "the road from the village was hard to find on foot — it's basically a car-only route."

⛩️ Bongjeongsa Temple

Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea (2018)

Bongjeongsa is home to Geungnakjeon Hall, the oldest surviving wooden building in all of Korea (National Treasure). That alone makes it worth the detour — you're standing in front of the country's oldest piece of wooden architecture.

🕘 One important note: Bongjeongsa closes at 17:00, an hour earlier than the other five sites, so visit it in the morning. There's no admission fee (it was abolished), and you can drive right up to the entrance. It's about 20 minutes from downtown Andong.

📜 Dosan Seowon

Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies (2019)

Dosan Seowon is dedicated to Toegye Yi Hwang, the most revered Neo-Confucian scholar in Korean history — the same figure you'll find on the ₩1,000 note. The academy he founded became one of the most influential centers of learning in the Joseon Dynasty.

🕘 Open 09:00–18:00 from February through October, with last entry at 17:30. In winter (November to January) it closes at 17:00, last entry 16:30.  ₩2,000 ($1.45) for adults, and about 1 to 1.5 hours to explore. It's roughly 35 minutes from Bongjeongsa Temple.

🏯 Buseoksa Temple

Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea (2018)

Arriving in Yeongju, Korea, Buseoksa was founded in 676 by the scholar-monk Uisang and is one of the seven Sansa monasteries inscribed in 2018.

Its Muryangsujeon Hall is Korea's second-oldest wooden building — a fitting companion to Bongjeongsa's oldest.

Time your visit for late afternoon and head to the Anyangnu Pavilion for sunset; it's most popular during fall foliage season.

🅿️ There's spacious parking, and an uphill shopping street selling local apples and drinks on the way up. Give it about an hour. It's around 55 minutes from Dosan Seowon.

🏫 Sosu Seowon

Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies (2019)

Sosu Seowon is where the whole seowon tradition began. Built in 1543 by Ju Sebung, the magistrate of Punggi, it honors the scholar An Hyang — the man who first introduced Neo-Confucianism to Korea. In 1550, King Myeongjong granted it a royal plaque, making it the first "sa-aek seowon," or royally chartered academy, and the first to receive tax-exempt state support.

🕘 Open 09:00–18:00, and admission includes the adjacent Seonbichon Village, so budget about 1.5 hours. It's about 25 minutes from Buseoksa Temple.

Route

Driving time

Hahoe Village → Byeongsan Seowon

Byeongsan Seowon → Bongjeongsa Temple

~40 min

Bongjeongsa Temple → Dosan Seowon

~35 min

Dosan Seowon → Buseoksa Temple

~55 min

Buseoksa Temple → Sosu Seowon

3. Suggested Itineraries

Two ways to plan it, depending on how much time you have.

🗓️ 3 Days: All Six Sites

  • Day 1: Pick up in Busan → drive straight to Andong → Hahoe Village (about 3 hours).

  • Day 2: Byeongsan Seowon → Bongjeongsa Temple (morning only, remember the 17:00 close) → Dosan Seowon.

  • Day 3: Buseoksa Temple → Sosu Seowon → return the car in Busan.

🗓️ 4 Days: Add Yangdong & Downtown Andong

  • Day 1: Pick up at Gyeongju Station → Yangdong Village (the other half of the 2010 Historic Villages listing, an easy walk or short drive) → Andong.

  • Day 2: Hahoe Village → Byeongsan Seowon → Buyongdae Cliff & Woryeonggyo Bridge.

  • Day 3: Bongjeongsa Temple (morning) → Dosan Seowon → downtown Andong for jjimdak.

  • Day 4: Buseoksa Temple → Sosu Seowon → return the car.

4. Beyond the Heritage Sites: Andong Downtown & Food

The heritage sites are the reason you came, but Andong's town center and its food scene are worth building around them.

🌉 Downtown Andong

The Woryeonggyo Bridge — a long wooden pedestrian bridge across the Nakdong River — is the town's signature sight, and it's especially lovely lit up at night. The nearby Andong Folk Village is an easy add-on.

🍗 What to Eat

  • Andong jjimdak — the braised soy-sauce chicken that was created right here in Andong in 1980, in the "chicken alley" of the Old Market, and has since become one of Korea's signature regional dishes.

  • Heotjesabap — a "mock ancestral-rite" rice bowl rooted in Confucian ritual food.

  • Andong soju and salted mackerel round out the local specialties.

🎭 When to Visit

The Andong International Mask Dance Festival runs for about 10 days every September to October — and 2026 marks its 30th anniversary, scheduled for September 24 to October 4, 2026.

If you're visiting in October, you can pair it with Yeongju's Punggi Ginseng Festival (dates vary each year).

5. Practical Tips for Driving This Route

A few things that make the drive smoother, from distances to parking to timing.

📍 Distances Between Sites

The six sites are spread across two cities, Andong and Yeongju, and you'll finish out in Yeongju.

Route

Driving time

Sosu Seowon → Busan (any office)

~2h 40m

💡 Tip: Driving 2h 40m back to Busan on your final day, after six heritage sites, is a lot to ask.

Lotte rent-a-car's one-way rental service lets you pick up in one city and return the car in another for an additional fee — so instead of backtracking the whole way, you could drop the car at a closer office and carry on to your next destination from there.

🕘 Opening Hours

Most sites are open 09:00–18:00; Bongjeongsa Temple is the exception at 09:00–17:00. Seowon and temples may keep shortened hours in winter, so check ahead if you're traveling in the cold months.

🅿️ Parking

  • Hahoe Village: free shuttle between the parking lot and the entrance.

  • Byeongsan Seowon: free parking, then a 400 m walk.

  • Buseoksa Temple & Sosu Seowon: spacious parking.

🍁 Best Time to Visit

  • Fall — the Mask Dance Festival plus fall foliage at Buseoksa Temple. Peak season, and the most rewarding time to come.

  • Winter — Hahoe Village under snow is unforgettable, but mind the shortened opening hours.

  • Spring/Summer — clear visibility from Buyongdae Cliff over the village.
