Seoul is one of those cities that could fill a month. 

But after a few days of palaces, subway transfers, and Myeongdong crowds, you start wanting something different. Space. Quiet. A road with trees on both sides and no one checking their phone.

Good news: some of Korea's best day trips sit within two hours of Seoul by car. A UNESCO fortress town. An island made famous by a K-drama. Riverside drives through countryside that feels nothing like a capital city. 

And with a rental car, you can string two or three stops together in a single day, something that's almost impossible on public transit.

Gapyeong: Nami Island and Beyond 

About 1 to 1.5 hours northeast of Seoul, Gapyeong is where most first-time visitors go for their first taste of the Korean countryside. Nami Island is the headline, but the surrounding area fills a full day easily.

🏝️Nami Island 

Nami Island became internationally famous as a filming location for Winter Sonata, and it's still trading on that reputation. The tree-lined lanes are genuinely beautiful, though, especially in autumn when the maples and ginkgos turn. Cherry blossoms in spring, snow in winter. It looks different every season.

Getting onto the island takes a five-minute ferry from Gapyeong Wharf. Tickets are ₩19,000 ($12.59) for adults (round-trip, includes island admission). 

If you want something more dramatic, there's a 940-meter zipline from an 80-meter tower that lands you on the island in about 90 seconds. The Family Course costs ₩55,000 ($36.45) and the Adventure Course is ₩58,000 ($38.43), both including admission and return ferry.

🅿️ Parking tip: parking at the wharf is ₩4,000 ($2.65) for 12 hours if you pay by mobile, or ₩6,000 ($3.98) at the onsite payment machine. On weekends during peak foliage season, the lot fills early. Leave Seoul by 8 AM if you're driving on a Saturday.

🗺️Nearby Spots to Combine 

But Nami alone isn't worth the drive. The real value of having a car in Gapyeong is combining stops. 

Petite France is about 20 minutes from the wharf, a Little Prince-themed village with pastel buildings and puppet shows (₩12,000 - $7.95 adult admission, free parking). Garden of Morning Calm is a botanical garden with seasonal flower festivals and a famous winter lighting show (₩11,000 - $7.29 admission, free parking).

And Gangchon Rail Bike lets you pedal along a decommissioned railway track through tunnels and along the Bukhangang River (₩40,000 - $26.51 for a two-seater, departing from Gimyujeong Station).

Try to hit two or three of these in a day. Nami in the morning, Petite France after lunch, Garden of Morning Calm for sunset or illumination. That loop is almost impossible by bus.

Suwon: History Meets Street Food 

About 40 minutes to an hour south of Seoul, Suwon has a UNESCO World Heritage fortress, a legendary fried chicken street, and enough to fill a morning-to-evening day trip.

🌲Hwaseong Fortress 

Hwaseong Fortress is a Joseon-era fortress that stretches 5.7 km around the old city center. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, and it's one of the best-preserved structures of its kind in Korea. 

Admission to walk the fortress walls is ₩1,000 ($0.66) for adults. You can cover the full circuit in two to three hours, or ride the Hwaseong trolley if you'd rather not walk the whole thing.

Inside the fortress, Hwaseong Haenggung is the temporary royal palace where King Jeongjo stayed during visits from Seoul. 

Admission is ₩1,500 ($0.99) for adults, or you can get a combo ticket covering the fortress, palace, and two museums for ₩3,500 ($2.32). There's a traditional archery experience at the Yeonmudae training ground next door, which is surprisingly fun and doesn't require any skill.

🍗Suwon Food & Culture 

For lunch, head to Suwon's Tongdak Street near Paldalmun Gate. 

The street has been serving whole fried chicken since 1970 and is one of the most famous chicken alleys in Korea. 

Shops like Maehyang Tongdak have been frying chicken here since the 1970s using the same iron-cauldron method. The chicken comes whole, fried crispy in large cauldrons. It's different from the yangnyeom-style fried chicken you'll find in Seoul.

After lunch, wander through the Haenggung-dong mural village and its craft alley cafés. If you're visiting in the evening, the Nammun Food Trailer Night Market near Paldalmun is worth checking out for street food.

🅿️ Parking tip: the Haenggung-dong area gets crowded on weekends. Use the Yeonmudae Public Parking Lot (₩1,500 - $0.99 /hour) and walk in. Arriving before 10 AM helps.

Everland add-on: Korea's largest theme park is about 30 minutes from Suwon in Yongin. If you're traveling with kids, a morning at the fortress followed by an afternoon at Everland is a solid split. Buy tickets in advance to skip the gate line.

Yangpyeong: River Views and Slow Mornings 

🌁Scenic Drives Along Bukhangang 

About an hour east of Seoul, Yangpyeong is the quietest day trip on this list. No fortress walls. No theme parks. Just rivers, gardens, and the kind of morning light that makes you pull over to take photos.

The main draw is Dumulmeori, the point where the Bukhangang and Namhangang rivers merge to form the Han River. 

It's been a filming location for multiple K-dramas, and it's famous for its early-morning mist. Show up at sunrise in spring or autumn,n and the whole scene looks like a painting. Free parking, though the lot fills fast during peak sunrise hours.

From Dumulmeori, it's a short drive to Semiwon Garden, a botanical space centered on lotus and water plants. 

The best time to visit is July through August, when the lotus flowers are in bloom. Admission is ₩5,000 ($3.31). The garden is connected to Dumulmeori by a pontoon bridge, so you can walk between the two if you're up for it.

🍓Local Experiences 

If you're visiting between December and May, Yangpyeong's strawberry farms are open for picking. Prices range from ₩17,000 to ₩30,000 ($11.27 - $19.88), depending on the farm. And if you want to stretch your legs, riverside bike rentals are available near Dumulmeori (₩5,000 - $3.31 /hour for a standard bike).

Yangpyeong is the day trip I'd recommend if you've been in Seoul for a week and need a reset. No itinerary pressure. Just drive, stop when something catches your eye, and find a riverside café.

More Cities Near Seoul Worth a Drive 

If you've covered the big three and want more options, these are all within 90 minutes of Seoul and make for half-day or full-day trips.

1) Paju: Art Villages & Cafés 

Paju is about an hour north. Heyri Art Village is an artist community with galleries, cafés, and workshops. Paju Book City has a public reading space called the Forest of Wisdom with floor-to-ceiling shelves across a cavernous hall. Free admission.

If you want to push further north, Imjingak and the DMZ are about 20 minutes from Heyri, though JSA tours require advance reservation and availability has been limited in recent years.

2) Incheon: Chinatown & Seaside 

Incheon is about an hour west and earns its spot for one meal alone: jajangmyeon at Incheon Chinatown, where the dish was first served in Korea over a century ago. 

Stroll through the Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village nearby (free, open year-round), then drive to Wolmido Island for seafood restaurants and ocean views at sunset.

3) Namhansanseong 

Namhansanseong is the closest option at about 40 minutes from central Seoul. It's a UNESCO World Heritage mountain fortress with easy-to-moderate hiking trails and one of the largest pine forests in the Seoul metropolitan area. 

The main loop takes two to three hours and works for families. Good for a morning hike with a café stop afterward.

Tips for Driving from Seoul 

Weekend mornings are brutal for getting out of the city. Leave by 7 to 8 AM or plan a weekday trip. Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for navigation and real-time traffic. Google Maps won't route you in Korea.

With a car, you can combine destinations that would take all day by transit. The Gapyeong loop (Nami + Petite France + Garden of Morning Calm) is the clearest example, but Suwon + Everland and Yangpyeong + Paju also work as longer road-trip days.
